Lake Manyara Game Reserve Safari

Where is the Lake Manyara Game Reserve?

Lake Manyara National Park is located in the north of Tanzania and includes both the Arusha and Manyara regions. It’s named after the Masai word emanyara, which is a plant grown into a hedge around a family home. It may be one of Tanzania’s smallest safari parks, but it’s popular, as Lake Manyara isn’t lacking in wildlife.

The park has a good supply of local wild animals and is well-known for its tree-climbing lions, baboons, and flamingos. As well as hundreds of species of birds, you’ll also find the biggest concentration of elephants in the country, and an abundance of impalas, wildebeests, buffalo, warthogs, blue monkeys, Masai giraffes and hippos. There’s a hippo pond at one end of the park (the only place here where you can get out of your car) and you can safely view them bathing from ground-level.

The main activity for visitors is with daytime safaris (between 6.30am and 6.30pm), but the park does now offer night safaris, between 7pm and 11pm, for an additional fee. A walking safari with a guided ranger is a popular option here, too.

An interesting fact about the Lake Manyara Game Reserve…

The shallow, alkaline lake itself covers as much as 200 km² of the 330km² total in the wet season, yet during the dry season, it is almost non-existent.

How do I get to the Lake Manyara Game Reserve Safari?

It takes about 90 minutes to reach the park by car from Arusha. If you prefer to fly, Lake Manyara has its own small airport (LKY), but the nearest major airport is Kilimanjaro International (JRO), which is situated about 46km from Arusha.

You’ll need to have your own camping gear and food, and the public sites are more basic.

There are plenty more accommodation options nearby, outside the park itself, including bandas, hotels, safari lodges and camps.
